Emmett Jackson is a Chicago-based double bassist, specializing in orchestral and contemporary music. His career has taken him across the US, Canada, and beyond to performances across Europe. A Madison, Wisconsin native, Emmett earned his bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University where he studied with Mark Urness. From there, he moved to Chicago for a master’s at Northwestern with Andrew Raciti, while concurrently being a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago for two seasons. Most recently, he lived in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, earning an additional master’s degree in Contemporary Music as a part of the International Ensemble Modern Academy.
Emmett currently serves as the Assistant Principal Double Bass of the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra in Appleton, Wisconsin and frequently performs as a substitute with the Madison, Quad Cities, Illinois, and Dubuque Symphonies. Equally passionate about chamber music, he has had numerous performances with the Grossman Ensemble, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble dal Niente, and Trio Anbau, a group he founded to develop and expand the repertoire for viola, cello, and double bass.
Emmett’s teaching philosophy centers around taking each student as they are and developing a unique path to suit their own interests and strengths, while building up the skills and techniques they need to develop musically. He also strongly advocates for the inclusion of modern and contemporary music in the repertoire of students of all ages, for its benefits of broadening their horizons and diversifying their skills.
"My favorite place to perform has to be the KKL Main Hall in Lucerne, Switzerland. The building is beautiful from the huge roof in the front, to the starry lights in the concert hall; and the sound inside is to die for! On top of that, putting it right on Lake Lucerne with the beautiful Swiss Alps in the distance? Nowhere is better."
